Friday the 9th of March Heidi went in for her last doctor's visit before her due date (March 16th). Dr. Allen preformed a sonogram and estimated that Beverly weighed a little over eight pounds. Also Dr. Allen thought he could see lots of hair. After the sonogram Dr. Allen noticed that Heidi's face was showing signs of swelling, and that her blood pressure was very high. He suspected that Heidi had preeclampsia, so he sent Heidi over to the hospital to be induced.
After monitoring Heidi's blood pressure for a while and Beverly's heart rate they began to give Heidi a medicine that would prep her for induced labor and delivery.
This was around 3:00 pm Friday as contractions began. 7:15 am on Saturday Heidi's water broke on its own and Dr. Allen had her start on Patocin to increase the rate and strength of Heidi's contractions. The only problem was that Heidi was not dilating very much. After about 14 hours of labor Beverly's heart rate began dipping slightly after each contraction so we decided to go with a C-section to protect Beverly.
10:45 pm Saturday March 10 we welcomed Beverly Honor Campbell into our family. Beverly weighed in at ten pounds ten ounces and was 22.5 inches long. Following in her father's footsteps Beverly had a high hematocrit and low blood sugar. Her blood sugar dropped to a 3 in the first 30 minutes so she ended up in the NICU. She was a bit big for the NICU...
She could not even fit newborn diapers! Beverly was put on dextrose to keep her blood sugar up.
So began a week of recovery for mother and child. Bevy did not like the nurses at the start, too much poking and prodding for her tastes. Heidi was high on pain killers and had a long sleepless night as she had her tummy pressed every 15 minutes for several hours. I stayed at the hospital on the cot of death...
I had a bar in the middle of my back all night. I now know how a teeter totter feels.
It was a while before we could hold Bevy, because she had so many leads and I.V.s hanging off her. Finally we were able to get a nurse to bend the rules and let Heidi hold her baby.
